How
to Use a Stun Gun
The
recommended stun device self-defense technique
is fairly simple; drive the device into the
upper shoulder, stomach, groin area, or other
sort of muscle area such as the neck or kidney,
and then pull the trigger.
1)
A short burst of 1/4 second duration will startle
an attacker, cause minor muscle contractions,
and have a repelling effect.
2)
A moderate length blast of 1 to 4 seconds can
cause an attacker to fall to the ground.
3)
A full charge of 5 seconds can immobilize an
attacker, causing disorientation and loss of
balance. Attacker may fall to the ground, weak
or dazed for some minutes afterwards.
When
used properly, stun devices can temporarily
disable a person giving you precious time to
safely leave the area. Most cities or counties
have private firms or individuals that offer
training in the proper use of stun guns. In
addition, you can check with your local enforcement
agency to see if they offer, or can direct you
where to get properly trained.
Here
are some important guidelines and information
that you need to know when using non-lethal
stun devices.
Once you have taken action, leave the area immediately.
You have gained the advantage so don't hang
around to admire the effects. Assailants can
react differently. Some are incapable of responding
for several minutes or more. Others, though
rare, may only be temporarily deterred for several
seconds. Whatever the situation, leave the area
immediately always assuming that your advantage
will be short-lived. Let's understand something
right up front. Some people on drugs, certainly
not all, are only momentarily disabled. This
is particularly so with those on PCP. Never
assume that the assailant is down and out for
several minutes. Leave immediately!
Do not attempt to defend yourself against an assailant
that has a firearm. Chances are, you will lose.
There is no piece of jewelry or any amount of
money that is worth your life. The only time you
should use these products against an assailant
armed with a firearm is if you feel certain the
assailant intends to shoot you. You then may have
no other choice. Once you have initiated action,
quickly move away from the assailant's line of
sight, leave the area as quickly as possible and
contact authorities immediately with a full description
of the assailant. However, the vast majority of
assaults are by unarmed assailants. If armed,
most will have some form of non-lethal weapon.
Despite the media hype, firearms are used far
less than most think. The odds are on your side
in most attacks.
STUN
GUN TRAINING
Stun
devices are specifically designed to get an
attacker out of your personal space by administering
a series of quick, painful shocks to the body
through the skin. These are weapons of surprise
or discouragement. It says, "Back off!
This is going to be harder than you thought!
You are going to get hurt doing it!" to
an attacker. Use it to create a bit of space
or distance between yourself and the attacker!
In many cases this aggressive response, combined
with a heavy dose of good old-fashioned yelling,
will be enough to discourage an attacker.
